Summit meeting of TU9 and TU Austria

On June 24, representatives of the technical universities of Germany and Austria met in Vienna for a comprehensive discussion of higher education policy.

TU Austria and TU9 represent the leading universities in the fields of technology and natural sciences in Austria and Germany. Their goals and challenges are similar, so it made sense to network these top alliances. The cooperation was established in June 2015 and has been successfully continued ever since. In order to continue the dialog, a recent intensive exchange between the two boards took place

At the invitation of the acting president of TU Austria, Wilfried Eichlseder, rector of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben, TU9 President Wolfram Ressel from the University of Stuttgart, TU9 Vice President Volker Epping from the Leibniz Universitaet Hannover were guests in Vienna Together with the TU Austria rectors Sabine Seidler (TU Vienna), Harald Kainz (TU Graz) and Wilfried Eichlseder (Montanuniversität Leoben) and TU Austria Secretary General Elke Standeker, the TU9 presidents and rectors discussed topics such as the current geopolitical situation and its impact on Europe as a business and science location, internationalization strategies and European university networks, experiences with cooperation and, last but not least, the declining numbers of first-year students in science and technology.

Common Perspectives

“The exchange with our colleagues from TU Austria is very valuable for us, as it allows us to discuss common issues and goals across national borders,” said Prof. Wolfram Ressel, TU9 President and Rector of the University of Stuttgart. ”In addition to international topics such as the current political situation in Europe and the war in Ukraine, the further development of teaching is of course an important point of discussion for us Particularly with regard to the innovative capacity of both countries and in terms of overcoming global challenges, the technical universities play a prominent role. An important basis for overcoming all the tasks at hand is a solid and future-oriented course of study, especially in the STEM subjects,” said the TU9 President.

“The challenges facing our society are global in nature. Even if we develop the solutions regionally, we have to scale them up to the entire world, which in turn requires international cooperation. The regular discourse between TU9 and TU Austria is an important step in this direction,” sums up TU Austria President Wilfried Eichlseder.
