The first Data Science Summer School took place at the beginning of July at the University of Leoben. It was organised by the Data Science Hub Leoben and TU Austria. The aim was to present machine learning and its application in engineering and natural sciences.
Machine learning
The future importance of machine learning and data analysis is undisputed; it offers the opportunity to create added value from data. In the context of engineering, the data comes from physical, chemical and mechanical systems and/or processes that must obey the laws of physics. Therefore, a special branch of machine learning is required that incorporates models of these processes.
Well-attended summer school
During this intensive week, the 36 participants learned the most important aspects of data preparation, machine learning methods and quality assurance in machine learning. The focus was on the application areas of robotics, machine monitoring and materials science.
The group consisted of doctoral and master's students from different countries: in addition to Austria, the participants came from China, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Iran, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and Russia.
