Successful TU Austria Summer School Doc+ 2018

The first summer school of the TU Austria universities TU Wien, TU Graz and Montanuniversität Leoben was a complete success. A total of 16 pre-doc students benefited from the program and were supported in improving their writing skills.

Doc+, TU Austria's first summer school, kicked off in Oberlaa on September 3, 2018. The aim was to offer doctoral students specialized training to improve their academic writing skills. A total of 38 students from the three universities applied and 16 were accepted. Many of the applications received shortly before the deadline show that students decided at short notice to use the lecture-free time for their academic careers.

Useful skills

The chosen focus on “academic writing”, a basic skill for all academics, was well received, as was the working language of English. The participants confirmed the benefits for their future careers: “This summer school offered a unique opportunity to improve my writing skills.” In addition to competent lecturers, the team-building activities were particularly well received: “Network. Nice experience. Great team.” The exchange with students from other universities received positive feedback, as did the competent trainers.
The highlight was a fireside chat with Horst Bischof, Vice-Rector for Research at TU Graz. Not only scientific topics were discussed, but also experiences and personal matters.

Continuation planned

In summary, the summer school was a success for students and organizers, and a continuation is planned. With regard to writing style, the mnemonic remains: “If in doubt, leave it out.”

Many thanks to Elisabeth Hambrusch and Dr. Eva Müller, who supplemented and expanded the writing skills in their workshops.
