From 17 to 20 September 2024, the seventh Summer School Doc+ of the TU Austria universities took place at the Vienna University of Technology. This summer school offered the inquisitive participants a unique opportunity to improve their scientific writing skills in a targeted way while also benefiting from an intensive exchange with colleagues from the three TU Austria universities. The four-day event also focused on teamwork and the interdisciplinary exchange of information.
Target group
The Doc+ Summer School is aimed at pre-doc students from the three TU Austria universities. Four selected participants from the Vienna University of Technology, four from the Graz University of Technology and five from the Montanuniversität Leoben took the opportunity to develop their skills in scientific writing and to gain new perspectives by working with other students.
Programme highlights: a focus on storytelling and scientific writing
Due to the floods, the TU Austria Summer School Doc+ started a day later, on Tuesday 17 September, in a hybrid setting.
In her workshop ‘Storytelling and Structuring a Scientific Paper’, Eva Müller, a biologist with a doctorate and an experienced science writer, provided insights into how scientific texts are planned and structured. The aim was to develop a clear storyline for papers and to formulate scientific messages in a concise and comprehensible way. Through exercises and group work, the participants analysed their own texts and thereby improved their scientific writing skills. The interactive workshop ‘Navigating the path to a doctorate’, led by Geraldine Fitzpatrick, a professor at the Vienna University of Technology in the field of human-computer interaction, focused on topics such as dealing with impostor syndrome and perfectionism, as well as creating a healthy work environment. On the last two days, Verena Brinda, a freelance translator and editor, taught the subtleties of scientific language in her workshop.
Supporting programme and conclusion
Alongside the intensive workshops, the TU Summer School also offered a varied supporting programme, including a talk on the topic ‘all kinds of intelligence and scientific writing – artificial intelligence vs scientific writing’ with Professor of Computer Science Peter Purgathofer and a geocaching event in Vienna. The week was rounded off with a celebratory presentation of certificates.
